    <title>August Meeting: Outreach Planning Meeting and Pot Luck Lunch</title>
    <description>
      Join your fellow SWE members on the outreach committee who want to increase student interest in the engineering profession or who just enjoy working with kids. At this meeting, we will determine which outreach activities we want to pursue for the 2009-2010 fiscal year and try to match up coordinators and volunteers for these activities. In the past these activities have included Girl Scout workshops, “Wow! That's Engineering!” workshops, science fair judging, merit certificate presentations, speakers bureau, job shadowing, and special events like Engineer’s Week.

<title>Influence: Who’s got it, why you need it, and how to get it</title>
<description>
Sponsored by Analog Devices

Have you ever wondered why sometimes, no matter how right you are or how brilliant your idea is, you just can’t get others to buy-in? Over your career, it happens time and again: you know what you want or you have the right answer, but you need others to agree and help you out. You’ll find this in trying to run cross-functional teams, get buy-in from senior executives, land that promotion, and find a new job. How do you get others to line up behind you? One tool: influence. No matter what your organizational position or your goal is, you will need more and more effective influence skills to be successful.

<title>March Meeting: Career-Compatible MS in Engineering and Management</title>
<description>
Are you thinking about pursuing an MBA to acquire management and leadership skills, but concerned about falling behind in your technical knowledge? Do you have a personal life you?d like to put into the mix as well? Come learn about MIT's System Design and Management (SDM) Program. Not an MBA, SDM offers a 13-24 month career-compatible master's program -- with full-time and part-time options that can be taken on-campus in residence, as a part-time commuter, or at a distance. SDM graduates receive an MS in Engineering and Management granted jointly by MIT Sloan School of Management and MIT School of Engineering.

<title>Sustainability in Environmental Engineering</title>
<description>Environmental Engineering has existed in one form or another since the first cities were built and urban infrastructure was implemented. But for far too long projects were developed that started and ended at the city gates. This led to water pollution for people living downstream of major industries and air pollution for people living downwind of power plants. Additionally, first generation infrastructure in many major US cities, especially Boston, is increasingly regulated, aging, undersized, and unchecked. Our panel of experts will be presenting examples of some current projects that take a sustainable approach to providing environmental solutions. In light of increased regulations resulting from shortsighted historical practices, environmental engineers have learned to take a holistic approach to projects, factoring in the economic, environmental, and social impacts over a projects entire lifecycle.

Event Sponsored by Malcolm Pirnie.

<title>A Survey of Energy Challenges and Potential Solutions</title>
<description>
Energy is a long term problem that will likely see increased attention by the Obama administration due to its profound influence on the economy, security, and environment. Jim Bickford will discuss all major segments of the energy sector and discuss various technical approaches that have been proposed to address issues associated with the current infrastructure. The oil/gas, coal, biomass, nuclear power, hydrogen, renewables, energy conservation, and energy distribution areas will be covered with an emphasis placed on the perceived strengths and weaknesses of each. Mr. Bickford will then address Draper's analysis and subsequent energy initiative efforts. He will discuss his experiences in the energy industry and the installation Draper's first system designed to improve the efficiency of coal power plants. Sponsored by Charles Stark Draper Laboratory.
