President's Welcome Message for SWE-Boston Web Site

Welcome to the SWE-Boston website! I hope you'll take the time to browse the site and find out about our section. Since 1950, SWE-Boston has been a resource for engineering students as well as professional women engineers in the Boston area.

I've been involved with the Boston section since graduating college in 2001, after being Vice President of the Northeastern University SWE section in college. Initially I participated by attending a few of the monthly professional development meetings held at local companies and attended the National Conference in Detroit on behalf of my employer, EMC Corporation. As time has gone on, I got more involved, first as the Treasurer, as a Girl Scout workshop committee chair, as a scholarship judge, as the 1st Vice President (Professional Development), and now as President of the Section. It has become a big part of my life and the relationships and contacts I have made are priceless.

Here are just SOME of the activities that SWE-Boston members organize and participate in:

Monthly dinner meetings featuring a variety of technical and/or professional development speakers at area corporations.
Monthly regional networking (social) dinners.
Regional and National Professional Development Conferences.
Girl Scout Badge workshops to teach young women about engineering.
Judging at Massachusetts Regional Science Fairs.
Speaking at local high schools about careers in engineering.
Presentation of Merit Certificates at local high schools.
Family-Friendly outings - in the past we have gone to the American Textile History Museum and Nashoba Valley Winery and Orchard.

Whether you participate in SWE-Boston events on a regular basis, take on a one-time task, or become active on a committee, your time with this SWE section will be well-spent and we will thoroughly appreciate ANY amount of time you give to our organization. I encourage you to join. In doing so you will meet many intelligent, inspiring women and you can be a great role model for younger girls. You will also surely make some new friends- I sure have.

Sincerely,
Kerry Mahoney
President, SWE-Boston
