This panel will include women from CDM Smith and the SWE Executive Committee who have seen positive benefits in both their personal and professional lives due to their involvement in various outreach activities. They will share their secrets of balancing work and volunteering, and offer suggestions on how best to get involved. Attendees will also benefit from seeing CDM Smith's approach to supporting these activities and their employees' involvement in outreach initiatives.

About the Panelists

Lisa Zagura graduated from Providence College with a B.A. in Special/Elementary Education and minors in mathematics and studio art. As an education volunteer in the Peace Corps, she served as a secondary school teacher on Tarawa, an atoll in the Gilbert Islands. Lisa went on to earn her Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Boston University. She now works as a Senior Electrical controls & Validation Engineer at Siemens Corporation in Canton, MA. She is currently serving as SWE Boston's VP of Outreach, and organizes several STEM events throughout the Boston Area.

Julie Lucas graduated in 2001 from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, with a Bachelor's degree in Sociology and a certificate in Criminal Justice. She started her career in Human Resources right away with Harvard University in Cambridge and then moved to a Clinical Recruiter opportunity for a hospital in Northampton, MA. She joined CDM Smith in 2007 as a College Recruiter and now manages the national College Recruitment Program for New Professionals as well as COOPs and Interns. Julie travels with her team of three to select colleges and universities across the country recruiting top talent and provides full cycle recruitment to managers here at CDM Smith. Julie has worked closely with Karen Kelly and been involved with coordinating STEM activities such as Panel Discussions with Engineers for students from Bunker Hill Community College, the Boston Private Industry Council's Job Shadow Day, and other small events as they arise in Cambridge.

Mary Barry has nearly 25 years of marketing, sales and public relations experience in the in the A/E/C industry. Mary currently is the Strategic Pursuit Manager for CDM Smith's Public Services East Division working with Regional and Area Managers and the entire sales teams to develop and implement long-term strategies for large clients and new markets. She also provides communication and public relation management on major and complicated projects, where she has managed and supported public outreach programs on a number of environmental and infrastructure development projects for both public and private clients throughout New England. Mary is a member of a number of many New England A/E/C and political organizations and is passionate about elevating the role of women in engineering and politics. Mary has a B.A. in Marketing Management, University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, and an M.A. in Communications and Public Relations Management, Emerson College.

Julie Gagen is an environmental engineer in the Water Services Division at CDM Smith. She has been actively working with Engineers Without Borders - USA since 2006, when she was an undergraduate at UMass Amherst in the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department. Since that time, Julie has traveled to Kenya several times as a project leader for her local chapter, organized several regional workshops, presented at several national conferences, lead national committees, and was the founding President of the Northeast Region of EWB-USA.

Karen Kelley is a senior engineer, groundwater modeler, and Project Manager in CDM Smith's Water Resources Division. She graduated from the University of Michigan with a Master's degree in Water Resources and Environmental Engineering and holds a Professional Engineering license in Environmental Engineering. At CDM Smith, Ms. Kelley has provided modeling and technical support on several groundwater remediation and litigation cases, and likens this aspect of her job to C.S.I. for ground water. Ms. Kelley has also worked on several projects in the Republic of Singapore to related to the design and management of a major new drinking water reservoir in the downtown area of the city. Currently, Ms. Kelley is performing coastal engineering analyses used to update the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA's) flood insurance program maps for New England communities. In 2009, Ms. Kelley developed the concept of "CDM Smith Cares" in our headquarters office in Cambridge. CDM Smith Cares is an initiative designed to facilitate, support, and promote the company's community outreach activities. STEM education is a particular focus of CDM Smith Cares. Her favorite volunteer activity is reading to her Power Lunch first-grader at the Morse Elementary School in Cambridge.

From the West: I-90 East towards Boston to exit 18. Keep right at the fork and merge onto Cambridge St. Continue onto River St. Continue onto Prospect St. Turn right onto Broadway St. Garage will be on your left.

From the North: I-93 South towards Boston to exit 26. Keep left at the fork, and merge onto MA- 3N. Take the MA 3N ramp to Government Center/Kendall Square. Keep right at the fork to continue towards the Longfellow Bridge and cross the Longfellow Bridge. Continue on Main St. Continue onto Broadway St. Garage will be on the right.

From the South: I-93 North toward Boston to exit 26. Keep right at the fork, and merge onto MA-3N. Take the MA 3N ramp to Government Center/Kendall Square. Keep right at the fork to continue towards the Longfellow Bridge and cross the Longfellow Bridge. Continue on Main St. Continue onto Broadway St. Garage will be on the right.

Parking

Free parking will be made available courtesy of CDM Smith. The garage is located on Broadway in the back of the building at approximately 210 Broadway, Cambridge MA 02139.

Public Transportation

Take redline to Kendall Square. Walk west on Main street toward Ames St (towards the Legal Seafood). Turn right onto Ames St. Turn left onto Broadway. Turn right onto Hampshire St. Total walk is 0.6 miles.

CDM also operates a shuttle from Kendall T stop- it is a Paul Revere Transportation bus and leaves every 15 minutes.
