The Society of Women Engineers Boston Professional Section presents

Networking - It's an Art

Sponsored by:

Networking can be defined as the gathering of contacts: the process or practice of building up or maintaining informal relationships in order to expand your contacts that can support you in your work, career and other areas of one’s life. Many people however dread the thought of actively networking.

This interactive session will provide attendees with suggestions and tools for improving your approach to networking. We hope everyone will leave with at least one new idea for how to approach networking and the role in plays in our professional lives.

About the Speaker

Phyllis Barajas

In the fall of 2005, Phyllis founded Conexión, (www.conexion-all.org) a leadership and mentoring program for mid-career Latino professionals. Conexión strives to combine the best of what is known about mainstream leadership with the Latin sensibilities that enhance and enrich our work environments, our communities and our country.

Phyllis is also the president of Barajas & Associates, a consulting firm that provides organizational and human resources development and diversity consultation.

In 1994 President Bill Clinton appointed her as deputy assistant secretary in the U.S. Department of Education offices of elementary, secondary and bilingual education. Before her appointment, she served as the first Latina assistant dean for human resources at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. After leaving Washington, she worked in Boston for Houghton Mifflin Publishing as its national director for human resources.

She has been recognized on numerous occasions for her leadership work including the Boston Business Journal and Boston’s El Planeta in 2009 as being one of the “20 on the Move” — an award given to Latino leaders making a positive difference. In December 2009, the Boston chapter of the National Society of Hispanic MBA’s singled out Conexión for special recognition for their advancement of Latino leadership. In 2011 the Women of ALPFA Boston presented Phyllis with their annual “Excellence in Contribution to the Latino Community” award.

Phyllis is a board member of Jobs for the Future, a national foundation focused on education and workforce development. She is on the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Board of Overseers and serves on the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley board of directors.

Phyllis is originally from Omaha Nebraska, the daughter of Mexican immigrants. She holds a BA in education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a master’s of education with specialization in human resources education from Boston University.
